The Flipped Classroom
There seems to be many benefits to implementing the flipped classroom model. Time limitation is one of the greatest challenges a teacher faces and there always seems to be more to teach. The flipped classroom seems like a great solution to this problem. Another benefit is that the students can pause, rewind, and rewatch the video lectures as needed. The thought of having to repeat myself LESS sounds very appealing. This seems like the best way to differentiate instruction while in class and out. The point made that students won't do homework if they find it too challenging, so better to have the work completed with the teacher, really resonated with me. Making the videos at first can take some time but then once created they can be reused and modified as needed. This model will look quite different in kindergarten and although it is not exactly the flipped classroom model, I have considered making videos myself to help parents work with their kindergarteners at home. I prepared a take home 'work with your kid type of packet' that included the letter chant, alphabet & number writing, all in sheet protectors, and a white board marker. This was in lieu of homework assignments. Instead of making videos I ended up talking to parents in groups and one on one, explaining to them how to use the tools to work with their child. I think that a video would have been more beneficial. I would have had the opprtunity to refine my Spanish, also the information would have been more consistent and comprehensive. My plan was to create different videos for the varying student levels. The idea of making videos to help parents better prepare their children for the classroom is a great way for our young learners to benefit from the flipped model. So much more of my time could be spent teaching reading rather than developing the skills for reading. I have seen a real boost in my students' letter recognition due to the work that the parents are doing at home. I have not given up on the plan, but want to refine it and work on this with my coworkers. Challenge Based Learning The CBL model is PBL at the extreme and really illuminates it's best qualities. The video of the students in New Zealand was inspiring. The students were so genuinely motivated and engaged. I think that all people, and maybe especially the young, need to know that what they are doing matters. This idea can have such a positive effect on their entire life. To have young people truly understand that what they do, good or bad, effects themselves and others. I would need to dig deep into the lesson planning to make this work in a kindergarten classroom, but just the simple idea of writing letters to people in need to show empathy, conduct food drives, volunteer work...all can teach the lessons of caring and responsibility. The integration of across the curriculum standards always amazes me. It looks so seamless and effortless. I attempted a PBL with my ELL kindergarten students. I felt like I was doing all the work. I would need to have a clearer picture of what this looks like for ELL kindergarteners to consider trying this again.
